The hilly strip of land along the Piave River between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene is where you’ll find the esteemed DOCG zone of Prosecco Superiore. This area, situated between the Dolomites and Venice, boasts a concentration of hill slopes reaching up to 500 meters. Valdobbiadene serves as the epicentre of prosecco production, with the top-quality Cartizze variety being a standout.
Nestled among the steep hills surrounding San Pietro di Barbozza, Santo Stefano, and Saccol lies an area that produces the finest grapes in the Appellation. Cartizze, a 300-meter-high vineyard spanning over 107 hectares, is owned by 140 growers and is the renowned “Grand Cru” of Prosecco. In 2008, a hectare of Cartizze grape land was estimated to be worth over one million US dollars. It has since increased to 1.5-2 million euros, making Italy’s most valuable vineyard. The sparkling wine produced here is now labelled as Superiore di Cartizze, emphasising its unique territory without mentioning Prosecco on the front label.
According to a local legend, Cartizze grapes traditionally were harvested last, as the vines grow on steep slopes and are hard to reach. This extended ripening period improves the flavour. Nonetheless, in a blind tasting at the 2006 Vinitaly trade fair, Cartizze were ranked consistently behind “normal” Prosecco.
Tanore is a renowned producer hailing from Cartizze, and the Prosecco available for purchase here originates just a few hundred meters away from the prestigious Cartizze region.
